Red Bay Maintenance and Repairs

These are the things we had taken care of by the fine factory service techs at Tiffin this trip.

Roof cap rails - redo seams to roof per current spec. This is a recall item repaired (and badly botched) in 2013 by Byoung RV (Portland). The gooped seams were atrocious... Factory techs know how to do it right.

Fixed kitchen slide rain leak under sink. Turned out to be both a rain leak and a drain hose leak.

Cleaned shower p-trap.

Drain standpipe behind washer needed to be sealed to prevent holding tank septic smells in bath area.

Replaced water pump to eliminate cycling which was occuring even during the night when we are asleep and no water was in use.

Replaced engine fan motor for hydraulic oil leak. This was done under our extended warranty.

Installed recall item - Clearance lights connector.

Fixed dash roof leak which was present since we bought the coach - the occasional drip-drip from the top of the windshield behind the TV where it drips down on the dash.

Repair broken dash vent passenger side & driver side floor vent

Fixed wall molding which produced rattle by driver seat when on the road.

Tightened up loose pedestal behind driver seat and passenger seat

Fixed bedroom slide - in bath area it was tweaked when it caught the loose wood box over floor cables once and the fascia pulled away.

Secure/tighten valance trim over BR slide above dresser and one beside fridge.

Tightened up dining table and console adding extra screws.

Replaced several switch panel rocker switches which had broken off.

Sold us special spray to free up several windows which were hard to open bedside and above couch, recliner, and passenger seat.

The rear tail light bulb driver's side appeared to have a short… lens assembly replaced

ReCalibrate HWH auto leveling system for better accuracy.

We were told to take it to Bay Diesel in Red Bay for chassis lube and other maintenance items p48/84 of service manual.

Repositioned sofa foward exactly 1" for better clearance on window valance.

Purchased two replacement gas struts for bay doors plus two more spares. Also purchased shiny new replacement rear rock guard with Allegro Bus name.

Had adjustable lumbar cushion installed in driver seat plus spare set of carpeted step covers.

Replace cracked windshield (insurance item).

Arrived Sunday February 25 -Departed Friday March 13

While almost 4 weeks in Red Bay seems like a long time to get work done, we have met people who have spent months here. It helps to understand how it works. We arrived on a Sunday, met with their appraiser on Monday to go over our list, and then were placed in the queue. We expected it might take a week, but it was not too crowded when we arrived and instead we got into service after just two more days... on Thursday.

Techs attended to various items that first Thursday and Friday. The service department is closed on weekends (like most). The next week, the shop was closed one day for a record breaking snow storm, and we were scheduled into several other departments for mechanical work and chassis service. Week three saw the shop closed one day for a serious ice storm, and then we had replacement of the roof cap rails (at no charge) which was our major item on the list, windshield replacement and another day of small niggly fixes from our list. Week four was the paint shop and a couple final remaining items.

Of the 25 days here, 6 were weekends, 2 were closed for severe weather, 10 days were spent in and out of various service bays, leaving about 7 days of waiting time, including the initial wait after arrival. While it may seem like Tiffin could improve their scheduling efficiency, it has to be a massive task coordinating endless repair lists for the hundreds of coaches which arrive here each week. They get major kudos for handling it all so wonderfully.

All in all we were extremely pleased with the quality of work done, the amicable nature of all the service people and relatively low total cost for all the work done, including all the "goodwill" repairs. While we were able to fit in some fun side trips including Muscle Shoals, the Coondog Cemetary and Graceland in Memphis, we are glad to have it all behind us and on our way to Florida and beyond for spring and summer travel and fun.
